Wait a minute, wasn't ol' TR, sometimes called the "Good Roosevelt" like there is such a thing, in the Bull Moose Party? Or was that a fraternal organization?

OTOH, Big Business (now called the Military-Industrial-Political Complex, or Corporations) might have needed a bit of reining-in.

I thought Upton Sinclair was the guy pissed about tainted meat. Or was he misunderstood because he was a Socialist and thought HE was discussing working conditions in packing plants?

They all fall under one category: DO-GOODERS. The most dangerous people in the world.

Yes, TR basically started the Bull Moose party. After he left the Republican party.

Well, as you may recall, the Nazi's under Hitler originally made great use of the SA. But their Leader, Rohm, had a different vision for Germany than Hitler did. So, to help consolidate his power, and build himself up as the defender of Germany, he painted the leaders of the SA as anti-German, and had them eliminated. Thus eliminating the threat to his own power, and solidifying his position as the great patriotic leader.

Right now, the left, while not totally co-opting the OWS movement, is not exactly hostile to them. But it is obvious that they have different visions, and in the end they will be hung out to dry. They will be remembered as nothing more than useful idiots.

Sinclair was gunning at it from the Commie angle with The Jungle, but it backfired on him. He was more worried about the workers than the nasty meat. The public was like "eww it sounds like we're eating some nasty meat" and totally ignored the worker angle. Roosevelt was like "I think he's a Commie liar, but the public won't shut up about this people-lard business" and so he sent his boys to the meat plants and they were all like "yeah TR, I dunno about all that jive Sinclair wrote about, but it's p. nasty in here, brah." and Roosevelt was like "well fawk me runnin' " and the Meat Inspection Act was passed.

We're talking about the Triangle Shirtwaist time period, here. Somehow I'm of the belief that yeah, they could use a bit of reining-in. Turn-of-the-century industry could be a bit like a villain from a Dickens novel sometimes.
