My grandpa does not travel with the team, nor would he if he was offered. Most of the time when he is working the games, he really likes itm but that is when he gets to stand at the sidelines. They do rotate the posts, and when he has to roam around the stadium around the concession stands he does not like it to much, but he likes the money he is paid, he gets paid through the County. I am not sure if the school pays the County though

Doesn't Norman PD work the games too? I wonder if they ever call in deputies from other counties ... Norman and Stillwater both just seem like logistical nightmares to me on game days ...

My biggest question is could the city they work for be held liable for something the officer does during an off duty job since they are wearing the PDs uniform and "representing" the city they work for even though they are off duty?

A uniformed LEO is never off duty, I am not sure about OHP, I only know for sure about Clevland County, The Deputies that work the games are assigned that duty, they don't have much of a option of not doing it, so they have to wear department uniforms to Identify them as LEO's. And since OU stadiums are in Clevland County they still have full authority on enforcing laws

Bob Stoops and Mike Gundy are both state employees. if you notice there are troopers assigned to about every coach at the major university's across the country. It's just the way business is done, my understanding the troopers are on duty.

As far as extra jobs, all state employees are required to report any extra job and it requires approval from their department head. Each agency has different protocol, my agency has a form that must be submitted prior to working a second job.

OHP in general do not work second jobs but when you see them on the side of a road construction site with their lights on that isn't a regular assignment and are receiving extra pay. OHP did take furloughs and this was a mechanism to counteract the effects. The plus side is if they write tickets the state still gets the money for them.

I worked a few OU home games when I worked for OUHSC PD. It was extra money and I was covered by the university. As far as the PD and the Sheriff's that work the games and if for some reason they were sued both the agency and the university could be liable.

Apparently the original poster is worried about government waste and rightfully so. But assigning two troopers to two high profile employees is a drop in the bucket compared to what the state waste per day.

I guess I fail to see what all the fuss is about. Are these officers, deputies and troopers not all certified peace officers for the State of Oklahoma? Are not the majority of people at these games citizens of the towns, counties and state that these LEO's were hired to protect? (and spare me the whole SCOTUS says we aren't required to protect individual citizens bit, it doesn't apply in this case)

Does it really matter what pot of money special event security gets paid for out of? There will always be LEO's providing extra security and emergency response surge capacity at large special events. Some of the LEO's there will be paid, some (reserves) will not. All that really matters is that citizens of the state have paid with their tax dollars for law enforcement and it makes sense to have them available wherever large groups of citizens gather.

I think people are confused here, When the coaches have LEO's there, it is not being a personal body guard, they are there as a deterent for people to attack thats it. Just like all the videos on youtube that has that westboro church, there are police there to keep pople from attacking the so called "Church" people, the church is not paying for the LEO's time
