Anyone on the boards work in the oil patch? Like a roughneck or tool pusher? I'm considering switching careers and this is something that has always been an intrest to me. Let me know. I'd prefer to stay in Oklahoma. Thanks.

My brother in law has been in the patch for over 6 years and was just laid off. Supposedly there were going to be 2 Keen Energy rigs without holes to drill. Just something to think about.

One of the most dangerous, and nasty jobs out there.
My buddies wife is an ER Nurse, and she sees a lot of injuries from the oil field hands. They aren't minor either.

While I know this is true. I've grown up in construction seen it all from someone getting half there foot ripped off to someone being killed. That's part of any job. They tend to compensate since it is more dangerous. I'm not worried about being hurt or God forbid dying. I figure I better get in and hopefully move up before I get married and have kids.

Im not in the patch now, but I have had 15+ years of it. Someof it is good and some bad. If you are a hard worker then you can make alot of money. It is booming out in western Oklahoma. They are looking for hands now. People do get hurt. I broke my back in 2000. Nothing like the joy of learning how to walk again. I was down for two years, but I went right back. The money was too good.

I've worked in the oilfield for 10 years. One just has to learn not to spend every dollar they make when times are good because it will cycle from high to low. Find a happy medium to live off of and save the rest for when it gets slow and you wont have the bank taking everything you've financed when it was busy. Its a damn good industry to work in and theres a lot more occupations than roughneck, contrary to what is on television. If you want to do something that is interesting and is not a typical 9 to 5 while making good money than the oilfield is for you!!!

I was thinking about doing this too. I did concrete walls, footers and flatwork for the last 10 years. So I'm sure I can handle it. I can't find any work though so I just want to do anything.
