You better enjoy all types of weather because your going to be out in all of it. The oilfield doesnt shut down for weather , or Holidays , or anything else your family wants you to be there for . Stay away from Schlumberger ,worst management in the industry , if you are not in a office you will be gone the first time the market even starts to waver . Because they generate all the revenue you know..Keep your head on a swivel when you cross that cattleguard , stuff can go bad in ahurry ,and people do get hurt trust me I've seen me do it .

Most of the time it's 2 weeks on 2 weeks off at 12 hrs a day which is 84. I've been known to put in 70 plus in 5 days. So this is nothing new for me.

This is pretty close to what my future SIL does. Only he will be on a rig from the time they kick-off (go directional) to the time they are done. He's only on the rig floor while he assembles the MWD part of the tool or when they trip out and he has to take it apart. The rest of the time he's in the shack watching a computer monitor. 12 hour shifts non-stop until finished. Usually around 2 to 3 weeks. He makes great money...

It is alot of hours, but good money. Being a rough neck will get your foot in the door, but its not where the money is. You do spend time away from family. As far as working in all weather, My dad use to say " You can't be a p#@sy all your life." The weather does not bother me. If you get into a field like coiled tubing, then you can go places. You can go from there to fishing tools and well control. If you work hard and show that you want to learn new things then you can make some big money. I had months that I cleared over 15K. It is a great job if you are young. The older you get, the harder it gets.

i have been out there for exactly a year. i never see a rig though, i work for Schlumberger and i work on a frac crew. the money is great, the hours are long, the work is hard. we get a lot of down time on location, but when we work, we work our ***** off. we work a 4 on 2 off schedule right now. usually around 70 hours for those 4 days on. we used to be 7 on 2 off and back then we would work around 100 hours in a normal week. we dont make our money hourly though, we are salary plus bonuses, and our salary basically pays the taxes of what we make on our bonuses. business is really booming right now. my crew is based out of el reno, but we pretty much live in elk city and most of our work is just across the state line up around alison, tx right now. we are supposedly hiring 70 new people in the next few months just out our el reno location.

Truth. I work for SLB, we went through 5 rounds of layoffs. I survived because I'm a bad mofo. j/k The management is pretty bad though. It's amazing the amount of stupid people in positions of authority.

what do you do for SLB? and it is true the management is pretty messed up, too many people get moved up for who knows what reason. people in offices create policies that people in the field have to follow that dont work when put in place.
