This is pretty close to what my future SIL does. Only he will be on a rig from the time they kick-off (go directional) to the time they are done. He's only on the rig floor while he assembles the MWD part of the tool or when they trip out and he has to take it apart. The rest of the time he's in the shack watching a computer monitor. 12 hour shifts non-stop until finished. Usually around 2 to 3 weeks. He makes great money...

They don't call em Movie Watchin Dudes for nothing. :)

Yep, it's pretty awesome...and requires no prior oilfield experience, that's what I meant by saying go directional earlier in the thread, MWD is a good job(what I am currently) and opens the door to directional drilling(insane money, not all that much more work...

Oilfield in western Oklahoma is picking up fast. If I was you I would try to go to work for a service company like Cudd. Start makin some of that easy money.

My brother in law has been in the patch for over 6 years and was just laid off. Supposedly there were going to be 2 Keen Energy rigs without holes to drill. Just something to think about.

Most of what's done around here is natural gas, and that market has an 18-24 month spread from high to low. We're right at the point right now where it should fall down to the bottom again. I know that a lot of big names are trimming back how many wells they are planning on drilling (at least in Texas and Louisiana). It's just the nature of the beast.

I did 6 years with SLB REW out of Duncan before they closed down that district. Money was good first 5 years ,not so the last year . Bonuses were cut to less than half what they were whe I started . Made alot of good friends in the field , you just about have too because your with them so much . I work for alot smaller outfit now and like it alot better . No RIR's to do and all that other stuff . Benefits are not quite as good but the money is close to the same and I'm home more than 5 days a month.

what do you do for SLB? and it is true the management is pretty messed up, too many people get moved up for who knows what reason. people in offices create policies that people in the field have to follow that dont work when put in place.

I work for D&M... Powerdrive electronics to be exact. There's only 4 or 5 of us left here from 2 years ago when there were over 30. Most of our operations moved to Commerce City, CO. Not a wise decision.

Schlumberber is working hard these days also. We have some friends from Louisiana who work for them. He just finished up a rig last week and is going to another next week (out at Geary). There were a couple of people out on the last rig with him that were trainees (had been there less than a month).

He likes working for them. Might check it out.

Oh, yea ... the amount of money he makes is sinful ... :)

Been there done that. Worked summers when I was younger for my grandfathers OKC based oil company in pretty much all aspects. Alot of hard work, alot of down time, damn good money. Only ever saw one guy get bad messed up- a brand new 'green' floor hand was trying to help when he shouldnt have and got his hand caught between the tongs and pipe when the chain man threw the tongs on the pipe. Luckily he only lost a finger. Never saw that dude again after that day.
