Too bad. It would have been nice to have the option for a couple of hens. source
There might be some ruffled feathers among supporters of a proposed Oklahoma City ordinance, which would have allowed residents to apply to keep up to six hens on lots of one acre or less.
The measure failed to pass during Tueday's city council meeting.
Some Oklahoma City residents who already keep chickens, like Jessica Thompson, spoke out in favor of the measure.
"I do give eggs to my neighbors. I've had no issue with my neighbors, so I do think this is a good idea," Thompson told the city council.
But some, like Ward Three Councilman Larry McAtee, were against the idea.
"I can see Neighbor A getting out of sorts with Neighbor B over chickens, and I don't think that's the sort of thing I want to promote," McAtee said.
Opponents also cited concerns over health and noise issues.
The proposed ordinance would have kept a current ban on roosters. It failed to pass, in a four-to-five vote.
