Second this. I have a truck with, let's call it, "coolant issues" and so I keep the info display on the oil/trans/coolant temps. Coolant is always up ahead of oil.

But its the engine and oil temps that are driving up the coolant temps, agreed?

Engine oil temperature is more indicitive of overall engine temperature since it circulates everywhere throughout the engine.

I agree that monitoring oil temp on cold mornings would definitely be the best measure of 'ok to drive' time.

glue on block heaters can be had for as cheap as 20 bucks....

My 2018 Subaru had a blue engine cold light just like my '66 Ford Galaxie 500. I'm sure the Ford was based on engine coolant temperature while I do not know what was controlling the Subaru. Normally the Subaru blue light would go out when the engine oil temperature displayed an actual temperature usually about 92 degrees F.
