So the 7th grader with the key chain got me wondering what you all would think about this situation. A little background:
My daughter is a senior this year at Broken Arrow public schools. She is ranked #62 out of 1,110 seniors, is a great student and person in general. She plays volleyball and for senior night all players were asked to make a poster representing themselves and these will be on display at the game. She printed out about 30 pictures and made a 'collage' so to speak also added a volleyball and some 'live, laugh, love' figurines, it's very nice
On to the 'situation':
One of the pictures on her board was of her target shooting at the range. Picture consisted of her seated at a bench, aiming down range at a target, that's it. After reading some of the stories that kids have gotten in trouble for I suggested she ask the principal about bringing in the poster with the picture attached. She approached the principal this morning and asked if she could bring it in 'as is' and if the principal would mind sending her parents an email stating it was ok. Principal responds with I won't send an email but I don't personally have a problem with the picture. Then enters the vice principal. Together they decide it would be best to not have the picture on the poster and really appreciate my daughter being proactive in the situation. My daughter responds with a comment about would they rather her bring in the poster with a picture of her in a bikini at the lake -vs- the 'gun' picture . . . the say 'yes'.
I'm very disappointed that my daughter now has to 'conform' to what these administrators say is acceptable. I have taught my kids to think for themselves and not to always follow but to do what they think is right. It's a hard pill to swallow now having to tell her to change the picture.
Any thoughts?
