So the 7th grader with the key chain got me wondering what you all would think about this situation. A little background:
My daughter is a senior this year at Broken Arrow public schools. She is ranked #62 out of 1,110 seniors, is a great student and person in general. She plays volleyball and for senior night all players were asked to make a poster representing themselves and these will be on display at the game. She printed out about 30 pictures and made a 'collage' so to speak also added a volleyball and some 'live, laugh, love' figurines, it's very nice :D
On to the 'situation':
One of the pictures on her board was of her target shooting at the range. Picture consisted of her seated at a bench, aiming down range at a target, that's it. After reading some of the stories that kids have gotten in trouble for I suggested she ask the principal about bringing in the poster with the picture attached. She approached the principal this morning and asked if she could bring it in 'as is' and if the principal would mind sending her parents an email stating it was ok. Principal responds with I won't send an email but I don't personally have a problem with the picture. Then enters the vice principal. Together they decide it would be best to not have the picture on the poster and really appreciate my daughter being proactive in the situation. My daughter responds with a comment about would they rather her bring in the poster with a picture of her in a bikini at the lake -vs- the 'gun' picture . . . the say 'yes'.
I'm very disappointed that my daughter now has to 'conform' to what these administrators say is acceptable. I have taught my kids to think for themselves and not to always follow but to do what they think is right. It's a hard pill to swallow now having to tell her to change the picture.
Any thoughts?

To me this constitutes a grey area. They never said not to, just that it would be "best" if she left the picture out. Choose the option that is not the "best" and leave it as is.

I think kids already grow up too fast these days... Why in the world would we want the stress of politics on them before entering adulthood. Sounds like you instructed your kid to pick your fight.

Forgiveness is easier to get than permission.

This is how I make decisions; if I'm going to ask permission to do something that I'm going to do anyway regardless of if I'm given permission or told not to do it, I don't ask for permission. If you ask permission, are told no, and then do it anyway, that's worse than just doing it in the first place without asking. You can always plead ignorance.:wink2:

Just to be clear, the picture was changed. I felt like I was doing the right thing by having her ask simply because I don't want her to do something to jeopardize her college career, etc. It's hard to try and teach her to stand up for herself and then bow down to the school because I'm scared if she didn't change it, it could hurt her in the long run.

Changing it was a good call. It's not bowing down/not standing up for oneself, sounds like a good lesson in respecting authority. I must have read your OP wrong. I didn't catch any of that the first time through.
