I was in a tree stand one time, before daylight, and had one fly so close to me I thought an helicopter was crashing. Its back stroke was was fierce. I'm pretty sure both of us had the same oh **** expression on our faces.
Another good rodent catcher especially out in the rural areas (just a little slow as their appetite is small) are King Snakes. They are also bitter enemies to Copperheads and can go where they go to make your place safer.
It still returns every evening. Wednesday night I came home after dark and saw it on the ground in the yard. I do not currently have an abundance of rabbits, but they may be the target. I found the hind end of an adult rabbit by the barn today. And, my gopher population seems to be the smallest its been in years.
