Except for the inaugural event at Thunderbird, I have used an Aimpoint red dot. Started with the H-1, then an M-4. Now I want to go back to an H-1/T-1. I did try a 3x magnifier behind the M-4 once and decided it wasn't going to work for me.
I liked being able to "see" better with the magnifier at distance, but the lack of stadia lines or other reference marks meant hold overs were still an issue beyond 400 yards with a full length barrel. That setup on a 10.x inch barrel was even more of a hassle in that regard.
Variable optics; like Nick said, have less forgiving eye boxes making less than ideal positions a challenge to find the proper eye relief. The best I have used in that respect was the Elcan Spectre 1/4. Huge exit pupil and a good BDC. The problem with it is the weight, size and the questionable scope mount/adjustment. Plus, they are expensive and I am not super impressed with their CS.
I suspect I will try other variables in the future; for certain situations, but a good re dot is hard to beat when you dont have to worry about PID at distance.
