Purchased a new F150 in 2018. Worried about the aluminum bed. Did the Bullet liner after delivery and placed a DeeZee rubber mat on top. Truck is used for towing a bass boat and a travel trailer. Worked fine so far. IIRC it was $425 for a 5.5 bed under rail.

Have an appointment with Line-X to do the deed on Friday, today I had 4 new Cooper AT3's put on. Had them on my 2000 and really liked how well they handled wet streets. Going with premium over the rail, might as well do it right.

Why not? I sit allot of stuff on the rail putting it in and removing it from the bed. 5 gallon gas can is a good example, I just do not have the strength to lift it over the rail when full.

Drop the tailgate?

I rarely go over the rail for anything and I have the strength, the bed sides are just too high on all of the trucks anymore.

Regardless of what you do the material will eventually fade in the sun(unless you have a bed cover). The material on the tops of the bed sides will eventually look bad from fading. Plus Line-X is pretty thick so you end up with a pretty ugly/thick seam where they stop it. The plastic caps on most of the trucks are fairly cheap, and easy to replace, I would go that route instead of the bed liner material.

So you put a 5 gallon gas can in your pickup, you either tie it in back at the tail gate or you sit it up next to the cab. Odds are you will not take off fast enough for it to slide to the back but you could easily brake hard enough for it to slide forward. To each his own, I put mine over the rail up next to the cab, typically fill 3 at a time. I also load stuff like plows, engines, mower decks and other things. with my loader tractor over the side. It's a truck not the family hauler, We have a 2013 Caravan for that.
