Was Kickapoo joy juice the predecessor of mountain dew or a competitor?
I don’t know. I just clicked on it because the title fit.
I believe it came after Mt. Dew, but not 100% sure.
Mt.Dew has been around a long, long time.
Yup it was my go to drink when in Jr High some 60 years ago.
Origin. Tennessee bottlers Barney and Ally Hartman developed Mountain Dew as a mixer in the 1940s. Soft drinks were sold regionally in the 1930s, and the Hartmans had difficulty in Knoxville obtaining their preferred soda to mix with liquor, preferably whiskey, so the two developed their own.

Mountain Dew was first. KJJ didn't come along (as a retail product) until the mid-sixties. Of course, it was a fictional sort of moonshine in the Li'l Abner comics long before that.

I think I remember kickapoo joy juice being on the bottles of Mnt Dew in the early 60's. Also they would put "bottled by" and then two funny names, like Clem & Abner, different two names.
Mountain Dew was first called White Lightning. I drank a lot of it when I was in middle school in the sixties. It later changed its name to Mountain Dew because the name drew a lot of criticism because people associated the name with moonshine.
