Well, he was the first guy to champion this sort of bill and the first to sign it. It's basically a Republican idea in the first place. At least it was when the Heritage Foundation cooked it up and Newt himself endorsed it.

Let's not get too worked up. With current debt beginning to exceed GDP, and adding govt. healthcare on top, this whole system will be bankrupt and have to be replaced in a decade or so.

How in the hell did Truman and Eisenhower pay off the debt from WW2?

That isn't debt. it is debt/GDP. GDP goes up even if debt doesn't.

Didn't he say he would support it on a state level, but not a federal level? I tend to agree more with that stance. If the blue states and citizens of those states agree that they want state run helf care then they probably have that right. I don't believe for an instant that the federal government has that right.
