you know, they could limit all cars to 35mph and it would reduce fatalities in the USA alone by THOUSANDS, or tens of thousands EVERY year.

but blow up a couple of planes, and HOLY CRAP the world just came to an end.

governing cars to 35 would be so easy, and not invade anyones privacy.

insurance rates would plummet, road repairs would be cheaper, damage to public and private property would drop, engines and tires would last longer...

everyone ready to vote yes on that????? lol.

The point, in case someone missed it is that these things that are being done in safety really have little to do with public safety, and much more to do with public's sensational image of safety.

so many more lives could be saved on a yearly basis by less invasive or less privacy intruding decisions.... but the public has grown accustom to the death rates and doesn't see them as a problem.

Umm, dude, the safety we are talking about it from terrorists. Not each other.

Kinda' like the guys involved in the Oklahoma City Bombing?

Yep. By doing so that made him a terrorist. What I'm saying is, this thread is about how to make the skies/airports safer from terrorist attacks, not how to bring the yearly accidental death toll down. Just trying to stay on topic.

Let me throw this out there......Do you get upset to have to drop your drawers and spread um or turn your head and cough? I was an officer at TIA for several years and worked around TSA. It is all procedural....I don't believe anyone cares about the body parts you can see. They are looking for specific things.....(Unless you get turned on by a green x-ray scan:greetings). They get tested daily with luggage sent through scanners and with hidden devices and such......Ask yourselves how you would feel if you where on a flight having to call loved ones because terrorist took over the plane you were on with an explosive device. I think it is a small price to pay for our safety....I don't fly much, but that is because I don't like to fly period. Has nothing to do with TSA...I think people in general complain too much! (I'm in Law Enforcement and deal with whining people ALL the time).....Just my little rant. TSA is a GOV'T entity and they are not going anywhere so you might as well get used to it....LOL! They do a much better job than contracted companies that got paid minimum wage.....:soapbox:.....

I think I misunderstood what you were getting at in your first post, I see now.

I think that's one of the main problems a lot of people have with this. It's more government telling us what to do. I see it as government thinks we are too inept to take care of ourselves. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the airlines private/publicly traded companies? Why can't the ariline companies do their own security?

Here, but occasionally There.
A few points:

1. From what I have heard, TSA agents are only required to have a high school diploma. Also, can anyone tell me if the TSA agents have to qualify through a background check? In other words, could convicted sex offenders be able to get a job at TSA? If so, would you want that person dealing with your teen-age daughter?

2. Ever fly El-Al? Those folks know security screening like no one else. AND THEY PROFILE ALL THE TIME!! If your appearance or demeanor or other circumstances "get their attention", you get pulled aside and questioned for at least an hour, and possibly by different people. When was the last time an El-Al plane had a problem? Also, I don't think it is the government doing their security checks.

3. From what I heard on the radio this morning, there is one airport in Florida that is considering getting rid of TSA and employing one of 3 or 4 different private companies. If those private companies are serious about being able to handle airport security, don't you think they would want people trained in profiling and not just some "minimum wage" flunky with only a high school diploma? I mean, Crud, some of these "high school graduates" can't even make change.

4. Just taking the opportunity to pick on WhiteyMac on this one, I'm glad he flies. I'd hate to think he is out on the road with me.

Those are some good points. Let's face it, getting a highschool diploma these days isn't exactly hard to do. A few things I would like to see are: (1) private companies doing security (which will create a high demand for jobs), (2) train the security in Behavioral Analysis (which is profiling and the gov't has a whole unit dedicated to that, called the BAU, so they can't say it's "wrong"), (3) bomb sniffing dogs (they would make a huge difference, even if it's just them being there). Just a few thoughts.

While El-Al is a private company, they are the Flag Carrier for Israel, meaning they work closely with the State and are the preferred vendor for their services. They have even flown military operations for the Israeli government.

So the El Al security checks could be well considered operated by an quasi-governmental agency, since the airline is operating under the privilege and authority of the State. But as you said I do not believe they are State employees.

A related question would be who does the checks for the Southwest flights transporting troops around the Air Force bases.

Please note that I am not disagreeing with you. Just wanted to expand on what you said and clarify.
