My wife had a handicapped placard, she could walk but not long distance. You might have seen me let her out at the door and park in a handicapped space so she could walk back to the car when we finished. I try not to get too judgmental over what I see, because I'm not sure what the situation is that I don't see.

Only a third of the disabled use any kind of walking appliance or wheelchair, so I definitely don't judge. Especially since I'm in that category.

I have a placard but don't use it unless I am really hurting and have to be out for some reason. There are so many people in this world who have it so much worse than I do ...

And like Aries said, you can't always tell by looking.

One day I was at Sam's picking up a prescription so I could give myself a toradol injection -- had a HORRID migraine. The kind where I couldn't see out of one eye and the other was really blurry. I got lucky and there was an empty handicapped spot so I pulled in, hung my placard up, locked the car up and went inside. I heard a bunch of honking but was singularly focused on getting in and out so didn't pay any attention.

I was halfway to the pharmacy when someone rammed me with their cart and was screaming at me about "stealing" their parking space. Now, mind you, I didn't see anyone coming towards me when I turned into the parking space and honestly don't know if anyone was behind me or not.

But apparently I had wronged this couple horribly. They were both going on (VERY loudly) about how I wasn't handicapped and I "stole their parking spot" and they were gonna have me arrested. Several Sam's employees came over and got between this couple and me (thank goodness), took me back to the pharmacy, helped me get my Rx and escorted me back out to my car, apologizing profusely all the while.

I have no complaints about how the employees handled the situation. They did the best they could, given the fact that the couple were still screaming and yelling as I was sliding out the exit doors to go home. I was REALLY glad to be leaving. Lol

Something I've never understood about that whole thing -- these 2 people had to park, then come in the store and find me. Now, I wasn't running like my ass was on fire, but I wasn't taking a leisurely stroll either because I was planning on getting my stuff and slipping into the ladies' room to give myself my injection and then heading home. But because of what happened I had to wait until I got home to take my shot.

I talked to one of the Sam's employees a few days later when I went back to get some shopping done and she said they had to threaten to call OCPD to get the couple to leave the store. What neither of us could figure out was how they could be so angry at me for "not being handicapped" when they must have literally RAN into the store in their attempt to find me. Neither of them looked handicapped. 🤷🤷 But I don't know their story so ... 🤷🤷🤷

I didn't use my placard much before that incident but I really don't use it at all now if I can avoid it. (Now I just send Grumpy. 😉😁😇)

I’m coming to understand that some people are really just that bad at driving. They have no idea and lack the spacial awareness for competent control of their vehicle. Case in point, one of my wife’s students (she’s a special ed teacher) has the mental capacity of around a second grader and graduated this past May. He’s a really nice kid so not putting him down in any way. What I am critical of is that his parents and the State of Oklahoma have decided to issue the young man a driver’s license. In two months he’s been in three accidents totaling at least one car.
Wow! Wish I could say that I was surprised.

Here’s another that’ll make you think twice about getting behind the wheel. My mother’s neighbor, nice lady in her early 80s was so blind she couldn’t drive herself to the DMV to take the test. Their solution was to send a DMV rep to her home where they promptly reissued her drivers license. And these people are amongst us every time we’re on the road. 😳

Just speaking for myself- turned 69 last month- I'm already a lot less active than I use to be, but still want to be able to move around and get stuff done- I still use a regular 21" Craftsman push mower to mow my lawn. I make myself walk to my local grade school with a walking track and do a couple miles every day. When I go to Walmart, I park out at the end of the parking and walk in- and back out - sometimes that's a mile of walking. I still like sex and while I know all this means nothing, I want to be active. A good friend of mine who worked out and ate better than I do, got home- walked in front door and died.
I say all that to say this, you want to act and feel old- let everyone wait on you- don't walk and stay loose, you will get to a point you need the close parking cause it's all you can walk. Set your fat rump in that 4 wheeler riding cart for your groceries, that will be the only way you can get them- act old- you will be old. I got underwear older than some you folks- I know what I'm talking about.
