Like all religions, the Sikh faith is steeped in tradition. One of the most revered is the carrying of a Kirpan, a sword or dagger, at all times, according to KING 5 News.

"People will even wear it in the shower. It's kind of hard for others to understand," said Jaswinder Singh, spokesman for the Gurudwara Sikh Center of Seattle.

The concept of the Kirpan is taught to children at an early age. The dagger is considered an instrument of social justice.

Many Sikhs who regularly enter security controlled areas wear a smaller kirpan than the one shown in the article. I've seen them smaller than this:

I've got a teacher friend back in Ohio who thinks this should be banned, based on consistency of zero tolerance, and that you wouldn't be allowed to bring this on an aircraft. I pointed to the First Amendment. He pointed to the Second Amendment.

I think letting them carry it is the right thing. This school district is being consistent, and I think, constitutional.
