tailgating a motorcycle is bad.

That's part of why I sold my bike. I couldn't stay out of the throttle and cagers do not pay attention to anything. Ball bearings were my choice of handwarmers in both jacket pockets....although marbles were cheap and didn't leave much for evidence. Metal inserts in the knuckles of my gloves worked quite well for "knocking" on cars as they chose my lane while I was still in it.

When I was YOUNGER and rode a crotch rocket I used to carry BB/marbles in my pocket. If I was driving 5-10pmh over the posted limit and had someone riding my ass I would wave them off. If they continued I would give them the bird and wave them off again. If they continued I would reach into my pocket and let a few of those BB/marbles go where they may 9/10 through the grill of their vehicle. I haven't rode in years but if I rode now I would most def brush them off and let them pass. There are way to many crazy ass people in the world now and no bike can compete with a car (even a Fiat/smart car).

Don't know how you guys do it. No way I'd be out on the highway, or even city streets for that matter, on a motor scooter with all the stuff people pull these days. Cell phones, DUIs of all varieties, road rage, etc. It's like playing Russian roulette every time you take a bike past the driveway.

Yesterday at 3:00 pm I was driving east on Highway 51 and was in the slow lane fixing to exit onto lynn lane. I had a guy riding my a$$ and I was running 70 mph. I came off the throtle and got on to the ramp. He tried to pass on the shoulder. I pulled off the road onto the shoulder and he pulled up beside me and rolled down his window I told him that ''you dont tailgate motorcycles"!! He said it was my fault for going so slow. ?? WTF?? I explained the he was an a$$ hat and needed to be more careful because I can stop faster than a car and he could kill me. He swerved toward me as he pulled off. He was next to me at the next light screaming stuff out the window. I just twisted the throtle and smiled at him. I wanted to chase him down and educate him but I thought it would look bad for me so I rolled on home and had a beer. I hope karma finds him. My karma debt is paid in full.

My mom taught me this when I was first learning to drive. Even though she didn't really like motorcycles, she said that if something happened - biker hit something, blew a tire, whatever - and you ran him over for being too close, you'd have to deal with that the rest of your life. I don't just "not tailgate," I give extra room for a bike in front of me.

When I was riding soooo many years ago it seemed there was an unwritten law that cars must pass motorcycles no matter how fast the cycle was going and since the cycle didn't take up the whole lane the car could use what the cycle wasn't using. Sounds like it hasn't changed all that much.

Other people is what has kept me off motorcycles my whole life. I have been in some pretty bad wrecks due to other people's poor decisions and if I'd been on I bike in a few of those collisions I wouldn't be here today - I just can't find anyway to justify putting myself in such a vulnerable position, despite how much the idea of a motorcycle appeals to me.

Also, if some knucklehead on a bike tosses a fistful of steel my way because he doesn't like my driving, I can't imagine any way that will improve his situation. I'd actually never even heard of that until reading it here. I'm one of the guys that goes out of his way to give bikes room because frankly I don't want them near me, I'm scared somebody is going to make a crappy decision that puts them on my hood or worse under my tires, plus it's too easy to lose a rider in your blindspot, so I'll drop to 5-10mph under to let them get away from me. Hopefully that will keep me out of any situations where someone thinks they ought to throw debris at me on the interstate.

I've never understood the mindset of the agressive rider, he's the most vulnerable person on the road and he wants to be a tough guy? All it takes is one nut job to swerve at his bike or door bang him and the next stop could be the coroner's. If anything, it seems bikers should be amongst the most courteous drivers on the road but I see guys on bikes shooting the bird & riding up to someone's window to mean mug the driver more times than I can recall. I just don't get it.

John I'm glad you're older & wiser and came out okay on the deal. I'm shocked to hear you are riding again but it's good to hear you are healthy enough to do so.
