It's called 'presence' meaning that the United States now has skin-in-the-game making it less likely that China will attack Taiwan out of fear of injuring or killing American soldiers (i.e. attacking 'America'). Actually it's a pretty smart gambit for dissuading China from attacking Taiwan.
