"We'll give 'em a fair trial before we hang 'em."

Lol, I don't even remember what that line is from...
:drunk2:

I heard it as “we’re gonna give you a right fair trial, followed by a first-class hangin’.” It’s from a western, but I can’t recall which one, either.

Apparently well before that... :drunk2:

The Westerner with Gary Cooper (1940):

In comes Gary Cooper, who has been arrested for stealing a horse. Brennan assures him that "we give horse thieves a fair trial before we hang them."

Yeppers...

...that's one of of those comments that have been used numerous times in the past, and likely always in westerns. I think John Wayne even said something similar in "Rooster Cogburn."

I just Googled it, Silverado was the first thing that came up and so I went with it. I guess I should’ve done some more digging. :oops3:

There's no guarantee the 1940 movie is the first either. ;)

It was attributed to Judge Roy Bean in that movie. No idea whether that's true.

They say history doesn't repeat itself, historians just repeat each other, so I don't see why scriptwriters should be any different.
