Did you really expect more out of the Tulsa World and a desk jockey cop? It's not like they sought out Lance Jensen for the interview, they found a pencil pusher. I've met very few cops that know much of anything about firearms.
The AR-15 has allure to EVERYONE remotely interested in firearms. They could also pen an article entitled: "4-door SUV's used as get-away vehicles have special allure with criminals", then get some "expert" to comment on on how the ignition system allows criminals to leave the engine running while they go in and rob some dry cleaner, and how the Ford Explorer is practically idiot proof.
