I'm mounting my 51" Plasma over the fireplace where there are no usable studs, of course. I am using a full motion mount so heavy duty drywall anchors are out. So I'm thinking of cutting out an appropriately sized rectangle of 3/4" birch plywood and attaching it to the nearest studs. Then I will bevel the edges and paint to match the wall and use the anchors/bolts that came with the mount to attach it to the plywood in four of the eight mounting holes, then in the other four I will use the heavy duty drywall anchors for a little extra support in the middle of the plywood, just for extra measure. The TV weighs 55 lbs and the mount about the same, so total of about 110 lbs. I think this system should work ok, any other ideas?

Nope you got it covered, Did my 42" Plasma the same way in the bedroom. I don't think I have a single stud anywhere close to 16" centers anywhere in this house.

3/4" plywood cut to mount on a 21" stud center 18" tall used lag bolts 3 lag bolts per side to attach plywood to the studs and then lag bolts for the mount attached to the plywood. Rock solid.

Any concerns about cooking your TV with the fireplace heat?

From the research I've done, no. I have a substantial mantle to keep the rising heat at bay and the drywall provides enough insulation from the brick chimney itself.

Thats the plan, I have 46" between studs though, a carpenter friend of mine also suggested using two 2x4's instead of the one sheet of plywood, but either way is the same general idea. I think it will look pretty good with the bevels on the edges either way when it can be seen from the sides...

If your paint color is easy to match, I would cut the sheet rock and mount a 2x12 between the studs and patch the sheet rock. Then again, I guess it would depend on how you want the area to look.

It's a deep red, very difficult to match as I found out from patching a hole today we had a large clock hanging from, that's still an option, but doubtful
