Union Plumber and Pipefitters have a waiver til 2016. I know because I was a member when up until 2011. They sent us a form letter informing us we were exempt from changes until then.

I belong to a union where I work. It is pretty much worthless. I am also the shop steward for my department. That is pretty sad when I am saying that. No one is willing to strike to try and keep the company from taking everything from us. I am a republican but I also know where I work that if we didn't have a union I wouldn't have my job right now. They at least can get it where it is hard for the company to fire us. But I agree of how the unions were praising Obama and hoping that he would win the election. And now look how things are going. I knew it would happen. And still my union president still praises Obama like he is the greatest president ever. He actually had the nerve to say he might go down in history as the greatest we have ever had!! I still can't believe that came out of his mouth. If you guys knew what it is like to work where I do you would understand what I am talking about. I wish my union was stronger but it is only as strong as its membership. And most of our members don't want to get involved. We are fixing to have our contract come up and no one will even show up to a meeting. I know for a fact if my union wasn't around I would be making minimum wage and couldn't miss a day of work without being fired. I have never seen a place like where I work. It is almost like they want to fire their employees. But until I find something better I am stuck.

I've never worked for a union, and I've had a job for 40+ years.
How does a union keep your job secure?

How is it that myself and millions of other workers in this country have jobs without unions, and have seniority in those non-union jobs?

I'll have to agree with this, and I don't have any kind of degree. I'm getting close to 67 years old and have been working full time since 1965, although in different jobs over the years. If you are in a similar situation, being without a degree, get some kind of education and move on.

I've got a nephew that was in HVAC in some way and in a union. His experience was that he would be out of work for about 6 months before getting work again, and that would only last about 6 months before he was laid off again. He left the union and that job and has had a steady job ever since.
