If warp drive were possible, I think it would have been invented somewhere in the universe already.

We would have been visited by now, or seen signs of it's existense.

Even if it had been invented somewhere in our galaxy, there is no reason to believe the inventors would have automatically run across us. Even at the indicated speed of 10 x light speed, it would take around 10,000 years just to cross the Milky Way, much less search it.

A civilization that can colonize the galaxy WILL colonize the galaxy. How long is 10,000 years if a society discovered warp travel 1 million years ago, or 100 million years ago. The universe is around 14 billion years old. If someone had a warp drive a billion years ago, they could have crossed the galaxy 100,000 times by now.

A ring-shaped warp drive device could transport a football-shape starship (center) to effective speeds faster than light. The concept was first proposed by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre. (Harold White)

To me the interesting thing about all this, is that many things from the old series like Star Trak are looking to be at least possible. First it was transporters and now warp drive. In a few hundred years we just may be out among the stars.
