We are a republic. Democracy is only a tool used in our republic to keep We the People at the pinnacle of our governance where specified in the the various articles of the Constitution employing the vote.

Yes we are a republic, but a representative democracy. We elect people to vote and sometimes they vote vote what most don’t want. Democracy majorly rules.
