They were used the same as today’s flashing lights in construction zones. You should be able to get the wicks anywhere they sell tiki torches, you might just need to be pickey on the size of wicks. I can remember driving through construction zones at night and they were all lit up and wondered if any of them ever were responsible for a fire. I still have 2 or 3 of them in my shop. We used to put citronella oil in them and set them on the porch when we would sit outside at night.
I was thinking about the citronella thing. The wick looks like it would be at least 3/4".
