My son's birthday is coming up, and he wants a knife, a red one, with nail file, knife, scissors, I think those were his only requirements. He's about to be 6, so not too picky but thats what he specifically asked for LOL. But I thought I would get him a good knife as he has a couple of cheap or old ones given to him thus far. I also want to get it engraved with his name. So what do I get, Victorinox or Wenger? Where to get it, and can I get it engraved? Thanks

Vic and Wenger are like Ford and Chevy. Both are great SAKs it's just a matter of deciding which one you like better. I have one of each and I can't really tell that much difference.

If he's only 6 and his requirements are only a nail file, knife and scissors, then it sounds like he's been doing a little research. Good for him! The model he's been eyeballing is probably the Victorinox Classic SD. It also has a toothpick and tweezers.

Beware now...those damned SAKs are addicting! Next thing you know, he'll be wanting one in, my personal favorite, Alox handles.

I thought about the classic, but thought about a few other things to surprise him. I wonder if they still have the magnifying glass? Makes a great firestarter, and I can show him how to take care of ants!

I was never without my trusty Swiss Army Knife when I was kid. I'd always lost a few but, as soon as I'd saved up another $34, I was off to Service Merchandise to replace it. I'm partial to the Victorinox Tinker only because that was typically the preferred tool of choice for MacGyver. Sounds like he has a great gift coming

I think I would find the one with the magnifying glass. I think those are cool.
Wow Service Merchandise, I haven't thought about them in a while.
Some day our descendents will say that about Wal Mart.
The one thing I remember about McGyver, he didn't believe in guns, but the guys with the guns saved he a$$ a few times.

Yeah, there is only one swiss army knife, and it's victorinox. and go ahead and get him the swiss champ, if he can wrap his hand around it, there is nothing he cant do with it! It's one of the first ones I ever got and I loved it.

Tinker, Classic SD and explorer are what I am looking at. Tinker doesnt have the scissors, but I like it has a phillips screwdriver. Explorer does have the magnifying glass and scissors, but no file.

Hi,

Victorinox IS the only swiss army knife. I've had many since I was 15 and they are a mandatory useful item.

One word of warning however - six is a very young age to manage one of these. They are very sharp and the blades are tensioned so they will snap shut when closed. Before turning him loose with a sharp one, you might get one and purposefully dull the blades so he can practice with it without getting cut. It is all too easy to have a finger in the way when you aren't experienced with them and cut yourself.

Three models to consider:

Tinker - if you want a basic model.

Super Tinker - it adds scissors. When I upgraded to this model I couldn't believe how I ever got along without the scissors.

Deluxe Tinker - it adds scissors and pliers. When I upgraded to this model I couldn't believe how I ever got along with the pliers in addition to the scissors.

Good luck,

Alan
