Hi,

Victorinox IS the only swiss army knife. I've had many since I was 15 and they are a mandatory useful item.

One word of warning however - six is a very young age to manage one of these. They are very sharp and the blades are tensioned so they will snap shut when closed.

LOL, I learned the hard way about the same age when I tried opening all the tools at once! He's pretty experienced for 5 and has had knock offs, and a few other folders, not all of them dull. He is well supervised. Surprisingly it wasnt me, but his overprotective grandparents that got him started with knives.

Victorinox bought Wenger a while back (Wenger is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Victorinox) and don't feel bad buying either (Wenger doesn't make too many models now - the Evolution and just a few others - a lot of their older knives are really nice though).

Most SAKs are slip-joint, which means that you have to know not to stab with the point or they will close on little fingers (I learned that the hard way when I was a kid).

Cutlery Shoppe has great prices and a good selection of Victorinox:

The Mechanic is pretty cool, but the Mini-Champ is one of the coolest in the tiny-size SAKs (the Midnight Mini-Champ is cool, but the red light sucks, the battery door is easy to lose and you lose out on the tweezers). The Executive is another cool small one.

The Explorer has a magnifying glass in it. The Cyber-Tool 29 is a good one as well (if he is into computers, this one is a winner for sure).

I have several Classics that Glock 'em down references. Over the years I've owned probably a couple dozen. The problem with them is that they're so small they're easy to lose. Also, the spring that the scissors use can break after a time. I love those little knives and hope to never be without one. But I think a 6 year old would be well off with something a little bigger with a primary blade that locks.
