Im not a smith, but I think if the gun stays overnight at his shop, it has to go in his bound book, so it would have to be logged out to the owner, so a 4473 background check would be required. If I have been told wrong, I would like to know.

Gunsmith is an FFL Holder and thus must abide by federal law an fill out a 4473.You transfer it to him to fix it and he must transfer it back to you via 4473

It seems that this might have been a transaction between Carter and Honeybee. If that is the case, why not just ask him yourself. He seems, as well as others, have made it pretty clear. No need to bring it to a forum to ask the question. Honeybee seems to be stand up person and wouldn't be doing anything to harm someone.

Unless he was getting your wife's info for his "personal" use. :yelclap:

The forum is an excellent place to bring it up. There are many of us out here who might learn something from the answers he gets.

As far as releasing it to someone other than the person who brought it in. Even with that persons permission. How do I know you're not a fed? Not that they would ever do something like that.

I guess I read it differently. To me it seemed like the OP thought it was strange this gunsmith was asking his wife to file out the 4473. I would have taken that up directly with the gunsmith personally. I do agree that this is an excellent topic to discuss, but it just seemed like he was question this particular gunsmith, and not the law itself.
