I'm going to have 2 surgeries in the next few weeks. Each will require me to be in the hospital for 3-4 days. I'm thinking about getting a $114 Kindle to keep me company. Are there any Kindle users here who can give me advice? Real world battery life? Free books? Etc?

My son (who lives in another part of the country) has an iPad and I love it. But I wouldn't need an iPad or use it more than the hospital stays so I can't justify spending the money on one.

Thanks in advance.

My wife has one, I've played with it, I wouldn't mind having one. e-Ink screens work really well.

I'm not sure what the $114 version is versus the rest of the lineup, she has the newer smaller graphite colored one with WiFi. With WiFi turned off and pretty frequent use she gets about a month from her battery, so I would imagine your 3-4 days of even constant use would end with juice still in the tank.

I had the Kindle app on my phone and have only downloaded free stuff, a couple of books I'm yet to read and some Edgar Allen Poe poetry. There's a ton of free content out there. My wife keeps talking about something where ordinary people submit their short stories and people can rank them, sounds interesting.

There's also Kindle on PC: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=kcp_pc_mkt_lnd?docId=1000426311

I have a Kindle my wife and daughter got me last year for father's day. I use it all the time
Battery seems to last forever before needing charged. No eye strain or glare. You can adjust the size of the words to make them smaller or bigger. Tons of free books on Amazon.
I have the kindle app on my computer at work, my laptop and my phone - so you can pick up where you left off if you don't have your kindle with you. Really comes in handy
Here is a great place to find out more about Kindles and they have a section on free books.

I have the 3G version, that way I don't have to worry about wifi hot spots. I probably really do not need it though. I also bought the lighted cover. It is expensive, but I think that it is worth it. It provides a lot of protection and the reading light is powered from the Kindle battery. Using the light does cut down on the battery life. You will get an AC USB adapter and USB cord. It can be charged from any full powered USB port. You can also check http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum/ref=hp_kcw_T3__disc and http://www.amazon.com/tag/kindle%20customer%20service%20q%20and%20a/forum/ref=hp_kindle_ss_T3_csforum for a lot of discussions. I have the Kindle app on my phone and my home PC. The Kindle also has a text to speech feature so you might want to take a pair of headphones with you.
