Yesterday, my Grandpa gave me this rifle he brought back from the war. It is a Type 99 7.7mm Jap. He said he picked it up in the Navy shipyards in San Diego on his way home from Guam. He said it was propped up in a corner with a Jap officer's sword... they sat there for a while and nobody came to get them, so he figured they were fair game! My grandpa filed down the firing pin on it back in the 40s, to make it a wall hanger I guess. Numrich has original firing pins in stock, and I just ordered one. :D. It will be awesome to put the first round in at least 67 years through this old girl! I just stripped and cleaned her last night. Here are some pics of the rifle and sword:

Question,

Which one of these old rifles is the most accurate out of the box. I know most of these rifles accuracy can be improved with careful reloading. Can you buy a rifle or type of rifle that will shoot let's say 1 moa with factory or surplus ammo? Which one has the best iron sights?

K31 + GP11, extremely accurate but the sights are extremely unforgivable.

Seriously great shooting man. I'm assuming you won the match with those results. One of these days when I get around to owning another bolt action milsurp, I'll have to come over for it. I'm down to just a Garand these days and it's glassed to boot so I don't get to use it much for anything military competition related.
Nope, third - got my butt kicked by two 299s :chop:

I have had good luck with Mosin Nagants. 2 out of 3 are very accurate. Some just ain't worth a hoot. I've slugged a few barrels on the dozen or so that I own and found they vary in size quite a bit. Get one close to .308 and you have a good one. One of mine measured .319 the bore looked good so I assume the manufacturing tolerances in WW2 were kinda lax.
I have some early Arisakas that are good too.
Best sights goes to an Enfield MK1 with a vernier rear peep sight.

beautiful sword.
Repair the crack in the stock with some good wood glue before you shoot it!
and look under the rear band for a cut in the wood, thats where many were cut in order to fit into a duffle bag, then glued back together when they got home, band hides the cut.
The fact that it has the crysantheum shows that it was a war trophy and not purchased or captured after the war.
Very nice indeed.

Yeah, it's got a few cracks in the stock, all in the pistol grip area. I guess I should do something about that before I shoot it. But it doesn't have any cut marks on the stock under the swivel. Yep, it's got a good intact chrysanthemum, and another interesting thing is that it has the original sling, which is a white canvas thing that appears to be permanently sewn onto the swivels -- I had to take the swivels off with it still attached when I disassembled it. The sling appears to have some blood stains on it too. Now normally I would throw a GI sling on the rifle before I take it out and shoot it, but I wouldn't want to cut this thing off. Original slings seem to be rare to begin with, and I haven't seen another one like this on any other Arisakas I've seen pictures of. It has the stubby cleaning rod handle under the barrel, and has some black and white painted rack or unit numbers on the right side of the buttstock. The only thing it's really missing is the bayonet.

the mum is intact on that arisaka and its also a nagoya arsenal rifle. going off the symbol to the right of the serial number. The symbol to the left of the serial number is the series. You can find an ID chart online. Going off the bolt IF its matching numbers it isint a series 6 or 7.
