Being attacked by a mob, regardless of their ethnic background, ought to be a justification for defending oneself.
Could be pointed out that the neighbor whose home he was begging to be let into when the mob caught him might have have been justified in using deadly force to protect him. At least in OK... not sure about Alabama law. But in OK, you can. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
