I think they secretly get it from people who like ketchup. Both are salty and a little sour. But hey, screw those guys. FREAKS! I mean vinegar on potatoes?!?
Every time Ive been to London/England or even Canada for that matter Ive seen people dipping their fries (or chips) in malt vinegar and sometimes white vinegar from small packets like we do ketchup here. In Canada they also have some kind of brown gravy for them especially with the poutine, and in England Ive seen people dip fries in this really thin looking sour azzed tomato sauce that was nothing like our thick and sugary ketchup. My wife uses malt vinegar all over her fish and chips when we go to Charlie Mitchells or Fish Daddys.
