So there I was thinking about my Budget build list,,,
And I thought I would go the opposite direction.

Here's the component list for a build,,,
Using nothing but KIDD components.

10/22 Build - KIDDAvailableItem
Starting Balance
1,200.00
Receiver
-242.00
958.00
KIDD Aftermarket Black .22LR Receiver Classic Slip Fit Model
Bolt
-141.00
817.00
KIDD .22LR Bolt -Black Matte
Trigger
-285.00
532.00
KIDD Single Stage Trigger Black
Barrel
-358.00
174.00
KIDD 18" fluted barrel, black, polished, threaded
Stock
-69.95
-853.95
Magpul - MOE® X-22 Stock – Ruger® 10/22
Total
$1,095.95

Basically that eats the entire $1,200 up,,,
And I haven't figured Transfer fee, tax, or shipping.

And then there's the scope to consider,,,
I would "guesstimate" at least $3-400 bucks for a quality optic.

So there's the High End build.

Here's the Low End build.

Budget BuildAvailableItem
Starting Balance
1,200.00
Complete Receiver set
-259.99
940.01
Ruger - 10/22 Complete Receiver – BX Target Trigger version
Barrel
-202.00
738.01
Shaw - 10/22® .920 BULL BARREL 18" BLUED STRAIGHT FLUTES THREADED
Stock
-69.95
668.06
Magpul - MOE® X-22 Stock – Ruger® 10/22
Total
$531.11

In both cases I have selected the least expensive stock I could find,,,

The accuracy of the most precise action and barrel,,,
Can be negated by a bad trigger.

Conversely, a mediocre rifle can be greatly enhanced,,,
By the use of a "good" trigger.

That's been my experience anyhow,,,

A good trigger is, as you've noted, a must. A good trigger, action, and barrel, though, need a good stock. That is not the place to scrimp. And as someone noted above, RimFire Central has tons of 10/22 info readily available, and I do mean tons. You can quite literally spend days looking through it.

I hear you mightymouse.

But that begs the question,,,
Where is the appropriate place to scrimp?

KIDD receiver with a cheap bolt?
Cheap receiver with a KIDD bolt?

It's the age-old question of cost vs. quality,,,
Which component will give one the most efficient solution..

The only reason I'm using the least expensive stock in my "guesstimates",,,
Is because I haven't yet determined exactly what style stock to use.

I still need to sneakily determine my friends preference,,,
I don't know if he is into skeletal, chassis, sporter, or barracuda style.

Now for me if I decide to later on build a 10/22 clone for myself,,,
It will most probably be a Barracuda style from Boyd's.

I think they are just too sexy for words.

In my fervor to identify possible build configurations,,,
I've completely ignored the need for tools.

All I have are the normal tools that most of us have,,,
But the only "gun smith" tools I have,,,
Are a cheap set of hollow drivers.

I don't want to set myself up as a gunsmith,,,
But what are the "essential" tools one needs to assemble a 10/22.

My knowledge of tools comes down to this one fact,,,
Cheap tools are basically a waste of money.

That cheap set of drivers I have,,,
Are made of poor quality steel (if steel at all),,,
The three smaller hex bits rounded off the first time I encountered a tight bolt.

So, any suggestions for a basic but decent tool set?

If I recall, there's only 1 screw holding stock on and 1 or 2 for the V block that holds barrel. Everything else is captive with pins and such that shouldn't need anything special.
Well now,,,
That's good to know.

I'm a guy so buying tools is fun,,,
But it's good to know that I won't need many.

Thanks for replying,,,

Super cool that you're building this for your buddy...wish you would have put 1/4 the effort and time into selling those Colts as you are analyzing every part of a 10/22 build. You'd easily have another $600+ to put towards optics (You gave those Colts away)...

Thanks for the good thought on making this for my friend,,,
It's a labor of brotherly love for me.

The thing is I did do a lot of research on those Colts,,,
The reason I sold them at that price was because I wanted a quick sale.

52 minutes after posting and the deal was made,,,
I have no regrets at all.

I had the joy of owning them,,,
I certainly didn't lose money on the sale,,,
And both of us are very happy with the transaction.

'nuff said?
