I got a 10/22 a couple years ago at Atwoods on sale and it was not accurate and I traded it and then began reading about all the tweaks and parts you can buy for them to make them accurate.

Question: Why did Ruger not make it accurate and fix some of the reliability issues.
My model 60 was dead nuts reliable and very accurate.

Is it because my 60 was 30 years old and this new stuff Ruger turned out is just quick money.

Do people want to really spend money on something they need to fix up?
I may be in the wrong camp on this.
But if i have a firearm that is reliable and stupid accurate i do not want to change it.

I see a lot of this adding bling like putting Hemi badges on a Slant 6 car.
I have a 10/22 that I bought about 5 years ago. Stainless, tactical stock it's a tack driver, also have a mk4 target in stainless and it's very accurate as well

Okay, it's time to fess up and say why I started this thread,,,
It could be that it's just because I'm going a little bit stir-crazy,,,
But I'm truly considering diving down that rabbit hole of 10/22 builds.

My best friend has helped me out many times since my retirement,,,
When I have a medical appointment that I can't drive to,,,
He's the one who will ferry me there and back.

We worked together at the university for well over 15 years,,,
We both started out as student workers there.

I graduated with a Masters in Occupational Education,,,
The college hired me full time and I retired from there in Jan of 2021.

He graduated with a Masters in Educational Technology,,,
The college hired him full-time to be their data-base wrangler,,,
He eventually rose through the ranks and became the Director of Technology.

His only problem is that he is a true family man,,,
Being that it seems every time he gets some spare cash,,,
One of his children gets sick, or needs something expensive for school.

He will never deny his kids (or his wife for that matter) anything they need,,,
He always (as it should be) puts their needs ahead of his own.

He has been wanting to obtain "that one .22 rifle" that can shoot "one ragged hole" at 50 yards,,,
And since I'm convinced that he will never be able to squirrel away the cash,,,
It just might fall on me to Friend-Up and build him a custom rifle.

I'm retired so I have the time,,,
I'm financially responsible so I have the cash,,,
I'm just not certain I have the capability to build a precise shooter.

It's not that I'm inept in manual skills,,,
Heck, I used to work on long-range seismic instruments in the service,,,
I put myself through an associates degree building furniture from driftwood,,,
And have always dabbled (and made a bit of coin) making "Barbeque Rig" gunbelts/holsters.

What makes me hesitate is my complete lack of knowledge in gunsmithing of any type,,,
I can read though and this brings me to the gist of this thread.

What are the titles of say, two or three good books on building custom 10/22 rifles?

Here are the ones I've found on Amazon,,,
Are any of them worth buying?,,,
Which is the best one?

If so, which one is best?

This might just be a thing where I read what is involved and chicken out,,,
But then again it might just open up a whole new endeavor for me.

Anyways, I'm asking for advice on these books,,,
Which of the three would you recommend?

I'm thinking the one by Amilcar Hernandez.

Thanks in advance my friends,,,

I'm thinking that my 'go to guy' for anything .22 would be @Catt57, he won't steer you wrong.

Best of luck with the build!
I went ahead and ordered this book,,,
It had good reviews on Amazon,,,
And the latest published date.

This should keep me occupied for a week or two,,,

The 10/22 is going to be the easiest for a beginner.

It has massive aftermarket support and is probably the the easiest platform to work on due to it's design. It's practically a Lego set for adults.
You could actually build a complete 10/22 without ever using any actual Ruger parts.

You got this!

I would recommend the forums over at https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/
They have a huge section devoted just to the 10/22 and sub-forums that cover nearly all aspects of it from bone stock to completely custom builds. There are some very knowledgeable folks over there.

Thanks Catt57.

It's going to be an adventure for certain,,,
But I'm certain with all the resources here and at Rimfire Central,,,
I should be able to build my friend a bug-busting rifle with serious aesthetics.

Thanks for posting,,,
