I probably shouldn't even post, due to relevancy. However, I have tried both Direct and Dish and have found dish to be a far better value. YMMV. I live out in the sticks and the only time that I have a problem with a signal is in the heaviest of thunderstorms.

Living in the sticks here too, but over the years, we have only lost signal on direct very few times.
I'm thinking getting the advice about dish alignment might be in order for some.

Dealing with either companies (Direct & Dish) when you have a billing problem is a pain. Be persistent and if in doubt ask the tech to email you the chat conversation you just had with them. I prefer Direct TV over Dish. Having 5 tuners in the receiver and being able to pause live TV when important things to discuss with the Wife come up has improved the quality of our marriage. That's a feature I'd find hard to give up now.

Unless you want the NFL Ticket, I see no reason to have Direct. Dish can pause live too, always has. Dish only offers a dual tuner in comparison to Direct.

Actually, Dish has the Hopper DVR, which has six tuners to the DirecTV Genie's five.

I used to work for DirecTV in Tulsa, so I used to have it (when we got everything for free.) Now that the company has been swallowed up by the blue Deathstar, I'll never have it again. I don't like Charlie Ergan's fast and loose negotiation style, so I'd never have Dish. That leaves me with Cox--but I've been satisfied with them for the last two plus years.

DirecTV has been great to me for over 10 years, customer service and signal. I work in this career field and can tell you 99% of the time any issues are weather related (even if you can't see them). It IS a satellite after all. If you have a bad signal and it's all the time, obviously it's an equipment or cabling issue in your house. Know your cabling and tell them you know it.

We've been considering switching to them from Cox. They've marketed really aggressively in our area. I like Cox, but they have raised our bill every year. This past year was the worst when they made us pay extra for each additional tv to get the digital boxes.

It seems risky to switch because directv requires a 2 year contract.

Yes, they have multiple satellites. Your dish alignment may need to be tweaked. You can check signal strength in Setup - satellite.

If I was planning on keeping them or if it was happening them every day I'd definitely follow up on that but we're getting ready to "cut the cable" and not have a provider for a while.
