Went out with my brother in law today, saw a lot of young ones out when it was windy, but as soon as the wind died about 430, this nice 8 came out and he let him have it.

I was gonna get the doe he was chasing but lost her when he shot the buck, that’s okay cause it was enough work just processing him tonight.

Thanks for the input @okieshooter777 , I might try it out myself and see what happens. The margin for error on the larger caliber is what had me favor it. Can't be losing / having a rough experience on a first deer for him ;)
I’ve taken dozens of deer with 55 grain sierra soft points. Never lost any and the runners with lung shots go no more than 30 yds.

I took my son out yesterday morning, in hopes of getting him his first deer. He asked what he could shoot and I told him anything that stepped out, but would prefer if it wasn't a fawn because they are small and not a lot of meat. He seemed ok with this. We went back over where to aim, safety and how to avoid being kissed by the scope as we waited.

A few minutes before 7am, a spike stepped out but he didn't see it immediately. It moved across the shooting lane too quickly for a shot. Just after 7, a young 8 point stepped out at 80 yards. He walked straight toward us to 35 yards and turned to slightly quartering. My son said he was on him, I flipped the safety and the shot rang out. The deer ran back to where he came from and my son was crying. I asked what was wrong? He said the gun really hurt his shoulder. "That's why I call it a dirty ought six. We'll look into getting a different rifle that isn't so vicious for next year." After he regained composure in a minute, he was ready to track. I usually wait at least 30 minutes if I didn't see it fall, but I'm not going to hold back a 9 year old either.

We went to the site of the shot, not finding blood or hair. I secretly panicked inside a bit, but knew the gun and round combo doesn't pass through often, doing massive internal damage. We picked up blood in about 50 yards and I pointed out how to proceed slowly, not taking more than a step or two until you see more blood / sign. He got excited while spotting blood before I did at times. "It's like we're detectives, dad." He stayed on the trail for about 40 yards when i spotted the buck down. I just let him follow the trail until he finally saw the deer.

It will be one of my favorite memories for life. He asked several times if he could go look at the head yesterday. Hoping to start the euro process today for him. Couldn't be more proud.

Wow @okieshooter777 , how many freezers do you have now? He ha heck of a season for y'all!
Ha, im pretty full, but we eat a lot of deer, and summer sausage and jerky eat up a lot in my house!

did i forget to mention besides these i also killed a doe myself LOL
i like to stock up :)

the little buck my son shot had an infection, he must of been poked with a antler, as his groin area was punctured, his meat was yellow and very infected on his hind quarters, so i saved back straps, but decided to not eat the rest of him.

I got my skull cooked and cleaned today, and I’ll get some dollar store peroxide tomorrow to whiten it.

nose piece looks intact, i always seem to break them off and then super glue them back on, you ever have that problem?
i use hair developer for the whitening, and it does good, but you cant leave it on to long or it will make it brittle. what do you use just peroxide and it whitens it?
