4473 question on owned BP weapon

Picking up a 150 year old black powder weapon which was on consignment but never sold. Auction house wants me to fill out a 4473. Does this make sense to anyone?

I thought BP was exempt

As owner of bp weapon would batfe require a 4473 of me?

Cabelas has tags on theirs that say ‘4473 required’. I bought one at a pawn shop recently and had to fill one out. I think it’s more individual policy than anything.

Somebody doesn’t know what they’re doing. Antiques and muzzleloaders that CAN’T be converted to take cartridges are exempt from 4473 forms.

Maybe their line of thought is it takes a BP cartridge? It will not take firing as it is 150 year old Damascus barrel.

? good question believe the 4 or 5 i bought at a closing walmart were just layed out on the counter i paid and left no forms required

Yeah it isnt required, but Bass Pro and Walls will still require that one is completed because of store policy. Its just easier to train "this form on every purchase" rather than teach them what qualifies and what doesn't for the 4473. I guess theres no fine for having too many 4473s

Thank you! I think the end real reason is they took it and put into their log as a modern weapon so this is to keep them out of jail.

Its a individual business policy not at law cause BP is exempt thats why you can order them online and have them shipped to your door just like air guns.

Straightened out, thanks for the feedback! No 4473 but did sign the log showing it was picked up by owner. Protect business, not an issue. 4473 for my own, strange.
