Agree to disagree on this statement, because the buck I shot in the heart on Friday with the 165 grain Corelokt dropped like a rock. I’ve killed a ton of game with that gun and load combo, and it performs the same every time.

Same results with 120 grain Corelokt out of a 6.5x55.

I have shot deer in the heart many times and if the heart explodes from a very well placed bullet you get dead right there critters.
I had many just cut through the heart or cut the top off of it and they run.

Maybe the heavier 165 pulls more stuff along with it like fat and debris and gets a good pounding on them.
My 2700 and 2900 fps velocity and 129 and 150 gr eeehhh it works but i would like more fragmentation.
My core-lokt were all old lead tipped and I see they have plastic tipped ones now.

I wonder if they thinned the jackets on those?

What were the 129 grainers? SST or softpoints?

SST is the worst bullet I've ever used on deer by far. Both in 7mm, .308 and .338 calibers. 7mm08 in a pistol, 300blkout and even 225gr in my 338RCM. They don't expand whatsoever imo. I didn't lose any deer with them, but they don't perform like anything else I've ever used such as .....

Berger hybrid
Sierra game king
Sierra blitz king
Swift A-frame

The 120 grain and 140 grain 6.5 cal and 165 grain and 170 grain 30 cal Corelokts I use are the old lead tip bullets with a cannelure, and it’s a tragedy that Remington no longer sells them to the public for reloading. I have a pretty decent stash, and I hope I can ration them to last the rest of my hunting and reloading life.

The only plastic tipped bullet I will use on deer size game is the 150 grain Hornady interbond in my 270 Win reloads.

Whenever I get a rifle that likes Amax bullets, I’m like DARN IT! I got away from amax’s because they wouldn’t leave a blood trail. The entrance would be the size of the bullet and I wouldn’t get an exit wound.
The bullet would just explode inside turning everything to gravy. It was devastating but no blood trail..
I had a couple go quite aways and if it would have been in thick cover, the trail would have been minimal

The CorLokt bullets themselves are great. The factory loaded ammo these days, no so much.
I have a couple boxes from the early 90’s that will shoot lights out. The same modern ammo shoots about a 3 inch group in the same gun.

My Dad had the same problem with Winchester Supreme 270 Win 130 grain ballistic tips and lost several deer because of it.

I’m having a barrel threaded for a savage axis this week. No accu trigger so I ordered the MCarbo spring kit. Has the bottom of the line Vortex Copperhead on it. My goal is to have a cheap plinker that will shoot SGK’s well. I really like that bullet. Not only for the price but its accuracy and performance.
I’m hoping I can get it out for the last weekend on a doe

I have had extremely good luck with SST’s and interbond with the .270 I don’t take it anymore it was dads rifle and I don’t want it scratched up I’ll get through this season and get another .270 more than likely
