The only problem with Academy is they don't back up their sales with service. They expect you to resolve any problems with your purchase directly with the manufacturer.

One of my local gun shops helped an Academy customer who purchased a Remington of some sort resolve a function problem when Academy refused to return the gun to Remington or give the customer any assistance at all. The problem was with the gun as purchased. not something that came up after shooting.

Just keep that in mind.

I have only bought one from them, an 870. The salesman told me if I had any problems to bring it back and they would ship it back to the manufacturer for free for service. I haven't tried that, nor do I have it in writing of any kind, but they did extend the offer.

Ive bought several guns there and always been pleased. The key is go to the same store. Have some small talk like you would with your buddies. I only shop at the 81 and 169 store. A lot of the guys in the sporting goods are on OSA. There some good guys i think. Never had an issue and will continue to buy from them.

Bought a little Mossy shotgun for my son there, couldn't find it anywhere else. I didn't have any problems. Price was right, but you definitely have to buy it when you see it, they have no clue when they'll have another.

Interestingly, I was having a chat with one of the employees about ammo (his computer said he had several boxes, but he couldn't find it on the shelf), he said that was common, he claimed to have had entire cases walk out the door!
How in the world do you sneak an entire case out?

I've had numerous dealings with Academy, all went well. The latest was a pair of Sarengetti sun glasses a year old, broke an ear piece. took them in to see if they could order me an ear piece. They just traded them for a new pair.
The salesman was excellent! I'm a fan

Just wait until you get your first "escort" out of the store when you buy a weapon. Freaking funny, makes you feel like your a criminal or somthing.

They are ok though, In the past ive bought a few guns there. They have the cheapest target ammo, that monarch is CHEAP...

Getting escorted out would be kind of strange.
I do buy some ammo but it seems like I always find a better deal somewhere else on the guns.

Academy is a great source as far as sporting goods chain stores go. They buy in quantity and sell for (usually) competitive prices. I've bought one pistol there, kind of on a whim. Could have bought it online and had it transferred for about $20 less, but I was up in OKC anyway and would have had to drive back up to complete the transfer, so it made sense to satisfy my impulse purchase urges and just go shoot....

Great ammo prices.

As for the "Price vs. Service" arguement, I never fell for that tired old story, oft repeated by overpriced gunshop workers. I've rarely had problems (twice, in way over 50 new purchases) with NIB guns and if I can't fix them myself, I'll pay the $7-$20 postage from my FFL guy to the factory.
