Ambien is a good drug to help you sleep, but it can cause some "odd" situations. I have never known of it to cause, or contribute to any violent behavior however. It can cause you to talk about inappropriate things and not remember it. I know of cases where people walk, possibly drive, and then when they awake normally have little to no memory of it. If it is taken exactly as directed, it almost always does exactly what it should. Most of the cases I am aware of where someone reacted odd, it also had something to do with a little alcohol. Not saying that in every case, just the ones I know about.
