Yes I agree. In a way we are responsible. We send our sons and daughters off to the military thinking it's good for them or patriotism or schooling or whatever. Most people can handle being reprogrammed and can return to a normal life. ....Some cant. Some can take the ugliness of war, others cracked just a little. But it effects us all in some way.

So we send them to military, they might get a little broke or alot broke. But we owe them. So what if a few game the system, it ain't like the military is justa job. In my book, if anyone gets a free pass at gaming the system, it'd be a vet.

Not at the expense of those who really need help.

Gaming the system isn't as easy people think it is. It happens but it's not as rampant as people think.

And there's not a quota on how many vets can get help. Vet A gaming the system won't affect Vet B getting his rightful benefits.

He had serious mental health issues. His family and neighbors did not have an inkling of what he was about to do, apparently. One of the troubling facts is that his shrink had put him on Ambien. Ambien is becoming engulfed in controversy.

It's rampant enough to matter and I think it absolutely affects other vets (or more precisely active duty guys, which is what we are talking about with this case). Increased wait times, availability of service etc...but more importantly the gamers and malingerers affect the others through the creation of a stereotype or stigma and the attitude of general suspicion towards anyone seeking help. So much that many troops would steer clear of treatment and try to tough it out just to avoid being sent to a WTU....or what many folks sadly called "the isand of misfit toys".

Then we get a sensational case like this and the media defaults right to PTSD and TBI....before they even really know the guys name and details. That drives the rest of the guys thinking about getting help even farther into the shadows because they don't want to be painted with the same brush.

What serious mental health issues did he have that you are aware of? Yes, that was horrible sentence structure, and I dont care.

The news said that he had stress related to having served for four months in Iraq, and was getting psychiatric medications for it. Said he claimed he got a brain injury over there, but that was undocumented. What is fact though, is that he was on Ambien, and I've read that sometimes people behave badly on Ambien.

I can only say this about ambien. My ex used it. It induced short term amnesia from about half an hour after she took it till she woke up. Made for some very interesting sack time and discussions the next morning.
