Is there such a thing as a decent air rifle for under $200? Thanks in advance.

absolutely! ... Sheridan Blue/Silver Streak with rocker safety in .20 cal .. pump up air rifle will last close to forever if you leave 2-3 pumps before storing. Sheridan Blue Streaks with Rocker safety if you get lucky .. about $125 - $150 range.. Silver streaks go for $300+ in mint condition.

stay away from new Sheridan Blue Streaks ... triggers are junk... rocker safety models have excellent triggers and are the most desirable of late model streaks. Silver Streaks with rocker safety are harder to find and cost more.

another excellent choice is any older Beeman ... used Beeman go for reasonable prices for a German made airgun. $250- $350 range... R-9, R-1 and R-7 are all great choices.

if you want to go with PCP .. Crossman makes excellent airguns .. Marauder.. but those will all bust your budget. best to start with either a rocker safety Sheridan blue streak or a Beeman R-9 for about $300 used .. you could get lucky and find a blue streak for under $95 .. they are around, some folks have no clue what they have.

don't believe those marketing lies about 1,200fps .. that's done with super light pellets that are next to worthless.

IMHO one is better off spending $250 for a used German Beeman with world class rekord trigger vs $250 for a new Chinese airgun with a junky trigger.

Where do you find good used air rifles?

the best place is on the Yellow forum classifies, which links to Brad's airgun classifies .. but only purchase from folks listed in BOI (no exceptions), which is a type of feedback thread on Yellow forum.

IMHO there are more scams on airgun classifies than other forum that I'm aware of. Scams on Craigslist may have taken the crown ...

put out a WTB on our own OSA classifies that you are looking for an air rifle, type, budget

Velocity - Accuracy - Value
Some things to look for in an airgun

new_cdn_pyramydair_com_aimage_diabolos_jpg_2_.jpg

When the pellet leaves the muzzle it starts slowing down very rapidly. It will lose more than half its muzzle velocity within the first 100 yards of flight. If the pellet was shot at a speed above the sound barrier, it will also be destabilized by passing through the sonic pressure wave it created. The sound barrier varies, but it usually remains near 1,100 f.p.s. at sea level on a normal day. When a pellet goes faster than the sound barrier it makes a sharp crack, which is the "breaking" of the barrier. It will be less accurate than if it were shot from the same gun at 900 f.p.s. or less, where the sound barrier is not a problem. While 900 f.p.s. is quite a bit below 1,100 f.p.s., there is great turbulence whenever the sonic barrier is approached. For this reason, knowledgeable shooters never allow their pellet rifles to shoot much faster than 900 f.p.s. If they buy one of the supermagnums that do shoot much faster, they use the heaviest pellets they can find to get the muzzle velocity back down.

Airgun quality does not come from velocity. It comes from accuracy, smooth operation, good design and quality control and other factors. Don't allow velocity alone to rule your airgun choices because if you do, you will miss most of what is good about this hobby.
