I'm thinking about making one of these this year- http://www.kijanigrows.com/building-a-low-cost-aquaponic-garden/

Fish + produce grown side by side with minimal water use. The only problem I see with it for prepping is it's kind of complex compared to just planting seeds in the ground. Complex systems have more potential for breakdown.

Hmmmmm ... I see a project in GC's future ... OK, ok, ok ... ANOTHER project ... Man, do I love honey-do lists!! Thank you VERY MUCH for the post Rook!

I understand what you are saying about the "complex" part of it ... I'm wanting to do this more for the fish than for the aquaponics, but figured I might was well get my money's worth and use the water for plants too.

I've been wanting to do an aquaponics system a while now. Apparently this guy from National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers uses aquaponics for his prepping food system- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-OgxoWwWtc&t=3m35s

You can run the water pumps off of solar and grow your own flies for fish food. It would be a completely sustainable system except for maintenance & occasional adding water. I have several relatives/friends with koi ponds in their backyards. If only they knew what they could do by pumping the pond water into grow beds and letting it drain back into the ponds!

Ive got about a 300 gallon goldfish pond. When the power went out we used some of the water to flush toilets. Once i put a 7lb bass in there. Wife wondered what happened to the goldfish. Hmm, cant take the hick out of a hickleberry.

If it was up to me, id fill it in, lilly pads took over.

The aquaponics always interested me, but I haven't been serious enough to dive into it yet.

I'm hoping to lose a few pounds myself and get the bicycle back out. Other than that, just keep doing what I'm doing.

I am going to start planting wild ediable plants around the property. I am also going to plant a few trees by the ol pond like a pecan or 3 as well as a few fruit trees. Not into gardening but having plants growing will be a good thing......
