Curious, intelligent, will get into ANYTHING
Playful, need some toys... watch out for toxic metals which can sometimes be found on the wire that holds stuff together.
Recommend wing clip to keep them out of trouble (if you like, PM me or call me and I'll talk you through it).

They need a fresh, pesticide free diet formulated for psittacines (parrots).
Limit treats - green or yellow veggies or fruit
Good supply of fresh clean water
Housing should be as large as possible
need several perches at different heights
He may enjoy misting, or occassional give him a pan of water large enough for bathing
Avocados are toxic. Just say no to avocados for birds.
Keep an eye on the dogs and cats
Might appreciate a nesting box for hiding

He will probably live to be 15 or so.

Oh ... cool!! The dogs are "mildly interested" ... I didn't get him a nest box, but will do that tomorrow. GC picked out a gigantic cage that was clearanced. After trying to put the MFr together I know damned well why it was clearanced -- worthless POS birdcage! :grumble:

I don't wanna clip his wings just yet. He's curious but not a pain ... I think he needs to be able to get around and explore while the dogs are outside ... Daddy had parrots (blue and gold macaws) when I was a kid. They were the smartest critters he had out there. This bird has a lot of the same mannerisms ... He's a HOOT! :)

Thanks for the info! I would never have guessed avocado was a problem ...

Haha! The only time he's bit anyone so far was when we were trying to put the feed dish in the cage. He was on that thing like a duck on a Junebug ... Poor guy ate and ate and ate. I started to take it away from him so he'd slow down a bit but ... yep ... you guessed it ... I guess if he gets a bellyache it'll be his own danged fault! LOL

He's sleeping now ... already been over every inch of the house checking stuff out. He really likes GC ... Who knew?? GC the Bird Whisperer ... :saywhat:

They're illegal in a few states, so be aware of that if you have to move. They're A-OK in this state, though. Birds are fun, but give him a lot of attention. Do some reading on bird behavior and training. They respond different to punishment than dogs and cats and you can make them aggressive by improper discipline. Also, birds are loud and newspaper is the best cage liner. It doesn't cost beans to replace and you need to do it at least weekly. Zoopreme makes a good pellet food that is nutritionally rounded. Petsmart has it and it's cheaper online if you're willing to order it. That's what we've been feeding our birds for years. If he eats fruit, be aware that it goes right through them and they will squirt for a few hours. Challenge him, play with him, love on him and take him into the shower with you. He will likely beg for the water and take a shower. We have perches for our birds in the living room. They're just 2x2s with some dowels run through them, supported on a plywood base. Hang a few toys on it and he'll stay occupied, be happy he's near you and be out of your hair. We have a pair of Indian Ringnecks and an African Grey, but birds are birds in the grand scheme. They have different different personalities, but the big rules are the same.

PM me the band markings and I'll try to locate the breeder. Quakers are great birds and are very intelligent. They are known for their ability to mimic, and most have a very clear voice. They sell for about $150 to $500 depending on color. If he/she is completely blue it could be a $500 bird. The green ones normally go for $150. Wish you had of posted about needing a cage, I have an extra.

If you need to know the sex, you can have a DNA test done, otherwise it is a guess. They have to cut the nail to the quick to get the blood. Best pet store for bird supplies is Rudy's on the southside of OKC. Jack, the owner of Birds Ect. breeds quakers, and could tell you tons about them.

If the bird is very people friendly, but doesn't talk it is probably a young bird. You could also try contacting avian vets around the city. Southside clinic is the one I use. Dr Kimberly K. Weiss, DVM is a great avian vet.

If you have questions, just PM me.

keep the stool lid closed , cage the bird when cooking ,would be bad if it landed in hot grease or water

Oh man ... your post reminded me of when I was a kid ... We had a couple of 100-gallon fish tanks in the living room. We also had canaries that my mom would let out in the mornings after all us kids when to school so they could get some exercise. One afternoon I came home from school and when to feed the fish and YIKES!! There was one of the canaries in the fish tank -- drowned. Now, all our fish tanks had full covers on the top of them, but there was ONE cut-out for a heater that didn't have a cover (or a heater poked down in it). It never occurred to any of us that a full-grown canary could get down in that little of a hole ... But he did ... GAWD he was ghastly looking. I was slightly traumatized ... YIKES!
