This was also a rally for a Democratic Representative so even less likely a weapon would be present. Also it would be very ill advised to engage a shooter in a crowd full of people, innocents running screaming every which direction,it's a tactical nightmare.

Also consider that Tucson is a different animal from the rest of AZ. Here's a map of the 2008 presidential election results by county:

Pima County is larger blue county at the south end of the state (the other blue counties are of course reservations, mostly). One could and likely should infer the number of those carrying firearms in Pima County would be less that a great many "red" places in the state.

So as Veggie Meat said that perhaps 2% carries, and we will assume for the moment that is accurate (no idea myself, so this it just a SWAG), it would likely be only half of that in Tucson.

There are probably restrictions against using deadly force to protect a stranger, unless you personally feel that you are in danger of death or great bodily injury.

if someone is shooting up the place and ranadmly shooting people, and if i am there, i could be next. there for i would act to protect myself from being the next one. just my opinion.

she also owned the game model gun as the shooter.

She was also a Blue Dog...

And her voting record, at a glance, appears to support gun rights:

http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=28507&type=category&category=37&go.x=13&go.y=14

though it was fairly limited during her tenure in office. Admittedly, of the two votes on record, one appeared more to support debtor relief but at least provided debtors to maintain some modicum of self-defense. The other repealed portions of DC gun restrictions, though in reality it was for DC to gain compliance with Heller. Still, she could have opposed those as many in Congress did.

I looked to see if I could find any information on her platform during her campaign but that appears neigh impossible to sort through now, with the shooting dominating search results for relevant keywords.

"As a long-time gun owner, I believe the right to keep and bear arms should not be dependent on the city in which you live," said Giffords. "The provisions of the U.S. Constitution apply to all Americans, regardless of geography."

"We have a long tradition of gun ownership in the United States," Giffords said. "It is a tradition which every law-abiding citizen should be able to enjoy."

God bless her and Godspeed in her recovery.
