It was a year or three back when I saw a man at my range,,,
Shooting prone and using a shooting mat,,,
One I can only call luxurious.

It was a full yard wide and seven feet long,,,
It looked to be about three or more inches of padding,,,
And was made out of what he said was "duck" canvas material.

It didn't have any pockets sewn into it,,,
It was merely a plain rectangle of padded sturdy stuff.

Rolled up it was right at a yard long,,,
And about 16 inches wide,,,
Easily portable.

He was shooting a centerfire rifle of some ilk,,,
Using a bi-pod and a spotting scope.

But the most important thing was,,,
He claimed to be perfectly comfortable.

He even admitted to napping there on occasion.

In my old age I find I like shooting from a stabilized position,,,
But for some reason I don't enjoy shooting from a bench.

For some reason I can't seem to find an ideal stool/chair height,,,
No matter if I'm using a bi-pod or bags,,,
I never seem to "settle" into place.

I hadn't shot from prone since basic training in the USAF,,,
Until I enrolled in an Appleseed shoot in my town.

I found that this is a very relaxing way to shoot,,,
If you weren't under a clock like Appleseed shoots are conducted.

So I'm fairly crafty and should be able to make a nice pad on my own,,,
But then I hit amazon.com and searched for shooting mats,,,

There appears to be a huge selection of decently priced shooting mats,,,
One was 6.5 feet long, 3 inches thick, but only 26 inches wide,,,
At the Appleseed thing I attended I had a piece of carpet,,,
It was 24 inches wide and I hung over the sides a bit.

But it was only $34.95,,,
I got $40.00 for Christmas this year,,,
I think I'll order one and take a chance on the width.

Pics will happen when I receive it.

You might check out Midway, I think they have some pretty nice bags and mats. Although I think there is something wrong with the mat I got because my shooting didn't really improve. The other thing is when I finally get down on the mat, with all my tactical stuff on, then I have to yell out for help so somebody will help me get up, and that's kind of awkward.

I just use the moving blankets from harbor freight for less than $10 you can get them in different sizes, quess it depends on how much padding you want thou.

The range I am a member of has concrete at the firing line,,,
Those pads would probably work well there,,,
Especially if they were layered.

I do want a decent amount of padding.
