Considering that the site was just created March 1, is only registered for one year, is registered privately, and renders like crap in a modern browser, and I can't tell who the payment is going to, I'd say it looks shady.
I agree, if they were wanting donations for legal defense they would have started asking when the lawsuit was filed, the plaintiff is the brother of the deceased (the suit in question is a wrongful death suit), and armslist would be asking on their site as a subdomain or on their servers plus they wouldn't do it with a private registration. IMHO this is a scam to get donations for the suit and will never make it there.

Sorry, I got this in an email that looked official from the email address [email protected] and assumed it would be legit.

It's alright. For what it's worth, it's *very* easy to make an email appear that it came from someone else.
E-mail addresses can EASILY be spoofed so that it looks like one person is sending it yet someone totally different is doing the actual sending.
