Get a guaranteed enlistment. Make the recruiter agree on what his job or duty is before any contract is signed. Otherwise he'll probably be on his way to an infantry assignment.

With the current mess going on across the world, overseas deployment is almost guaranteed.

I personally would have him talk to all 4 branches of service and see which one he likes. You will see that each branch has different things to offer. You will also see that some branches promise to give you everything and others promise to make you earn everything.

As far as "open contract" for the Marine Corps most of the people I know who were open contract when I was in acutally ended up in the air wing working on helicopters.

Yep, that's what I would do if I were him.

Once he takes the ASVAB, the scores are available to all branches, it's not a different ASVAB for each branch.

If he's interested in Infantry, I don't see that being too difficult. It's a popular choice but they always need Infantrymen.

As for the comments about deployment being inevitable, that's not true at this rate. If another war breaks out, that would obviously be true but deployments are being either cut down or cut out entirely.

In Afghanistan, the shift has gone from deploying full Brigades to small teams of trainers and advisers.

If he isn't sure which branch to join remind him that the AF sends mainly the officers to go fight wars while the other branches send mainly the enlisted.

Both of my parents were Marines. Dad was a Master Gunnery Sgt. and mom was just a few ranks lower (I think Gunnery Sgt, can't quite recall). I wanted to join when I graduated high school but they were pretty forceful in me going to college. Dad served 22 years, was a radar operator in 'Nam, retired shortly after I was born and used what he learned as a semi-electrical engineer. He didn't want me out in the current climate with a chance of dying in another country. Good luck to your step-son with whatever he chooses. I sometimes wonder if joining would have made me a bit more disciplined but I'm happy where I am now.

Heard a funny story once. Recruit stole a kids bike and some clothes to "escape" Paris Island, he was pedaling by the guard shack when the Guard on duty waved and in a friendly manner said "where ya heading?" thinking he was a kid who lived on base. Kid on bike said "this recruit....." and they realized who he was. He went on to become a Marine after all though.

:homer::bolt:

Pick something fun where you get to carry a huge ass machine gun and or shoot people.

That would be an 0331 if memory serves....a very FUN MOS! :fullauto:

As a retired AF Veteran, I could not recommend the AF high enough. Like everyone is saying, make sure to select a job that falls in line with his test scores that will transition to civilian life. IT or any aircraft maintenance would allow him a good oppurtunity to make a good living. Do some research and get it in WRITING because recruiters are almost as bad as politicians.

Marines will garuantee MOS such as Avaition Electronics, Administration, Infantry etc... His scores will show what MOS's he qualifies for. The job within that field will be chosen by the Corps. I was Aministration and was a Legal Service Specialist (paralegal). Over 10 years I changed MOS fields upon reinlistment also. In general I think the Marine Corps was the best for several reasons. There is no equal for leadership and management skill developement. There is also no equal in instilling self confidence and pride in what you do. Striving for the max instead of just getting by is the rule.

Army 2 years - Tanks - didn't like it.
USMC 10 years - legal and journalist - Liked it, might have gone infantry if I had a do-over.
USAF Res - 8 years - Security Forces - eh, not bad. I finally retired recently.

Go Marines
