Their goal is to get him to go in Open Contract, that way they can put him anywhere they want. Don't let him do this. Any job that is in the civilian world can be had in he Military.

When I graduated high school I wanted to fly a helicopter so bad I couldn't see straight. I talked with the recruiter for the Marines and the Army (never got to talk to the AF guy), and both said they couldn't guarantee me anything till after bootcamp. I was a straight A student in pretty good shape, so the Marine recruiter said I should be fine and not to worry about it until I had finished bootcamp. Didn't feel right; I went to college.

Marines will garuantee MOS such as Avaition Electronics, Administration, Infantry etc... His scores will show what MOS's he qualifies for. The job within that field will be chosen by the Corps. I was Aministration and was a Legal Service Specialist (paralegal). Over 10 years I changed MOS fields upon reinlistment also. In general I think the Marine Corps was the best for several reasons. There is no equal for leadership and management skill developement. There is also no equal in instilling self confidence and pride in what you do. Striving for the max instead of just getting by is the rule.

Army 2 years - Tanks - didn't like it.
USMC 10 years - legal and journalist - Liked it, might have gone infantry if I had a do-over.
USAF Res - 8 years - Security Forces - eh, not bad. I finally retired recently.

Go Marines
Semper Fi

Why didnt you like it? What do you have to do to get that as your mos?

That is not true. Each Recruiting station has a certain mission. They also have quotas to try and fill from the different MOS's each month.

To the OP if you have questions I will answer them to the best of my ability. I was an active duty Marine Recruiter for a bit and also a National Guard recruiter. I was far from the best, however I still have a good idea how things work.

I was drafted in 70, but never opened the letter. Went to the recruiter, and told him I wanted to sign up for an extra year to get a school.
My highest scores were in electronics, so I selected fixed station microwave operations and maintenance as a school. got it in writing.
Attended The school, finding out that if you failed a segment, you were then shipped to an infantry unit. Good incentive to study.
That was as far as the "in writing" went. Once you hit your duty station anything goes.
I ended up carrying a field radio in a rifle squad in Vietnam.
Never the less, that education And the fact I could put it on my resume' opened a lot of doors for me and my family. All these years later, I'm still making a good living from the training and education I received from the military.

Visit went fine. He is set on infantry rifleman. He went down this morning to get medical paperwork signed and etc etc. No sign on bonus and no guarantee except he will get his MOS but what sub-cat will be picked based on demand as previously stated by another member up above.

The only thing the recruiter guaranteed or would put in writing is "We will make him a Marine". He was here for about 2 hours and seemed to care but as he said, he is a glorified car salesman.

Been: to answer your question:

I was 18 and overseas. M60's were not as glamorous as the film I watched. The job fields were based on ASVAB scores.

I spent 2 years in the Army Reserves and 20 in the regular Army. In the Reserves I was in the Infinity and on active duty I was in the Artillery. My asvab score was a 124. All I wanted to do when I joined was be a soldier. I did not want to fix stuff or push paper. I qualified for a lot of different jobs, but I truly wanted to blow stuff up. I knew I was never going to get a great job on the outside, with my military experience. Therefore, I completed my educational goals. I am now an old fat, History/Geography teacher. I have lots of pictures and stories to talk to the kids about. They see a picture of me when I was 35 and always ask "what happened."
Just tell your kid you are proud of him, and call if he ever needs to rant about something. Do everything you can do to make it to his graduation, it will mean more to him than anything you have ever done for him in his life.
Tell him to have a plan, for what he is going to do when he gets out.
One last thing, tell him strippers are fun, but don't marry one. Lots of girls around military installations, who are just looking to get married, it never works out.
