That Unitas deployment gave me stories for a lifetime. We were young, dumb and full of, well you know. We made the secret service guys in cartehena look like choir boys.

And we have to remember this is a family oriented site. Most of the stuff I did wasn't family friendly...but it sure was fun!

Which UNITAS did you do? I went in '92. And yes, good times in Cartegena! (And Rio, Maracaibo, Recife, Punta Arenas, Coquimbo, Bahia Blanca, etc...)

Ok heres a tale i can tell.

The day before the ship was to depart, LPO told me to be onboard by 0200, odd but not unusual. We decided to run to a bar in San Jose, got drunked up, ride broke down but got to ship at 0215ish. Not a big deal because ships crew didnt have to report until 0730. Ship was not getting underway until that evening.

2 or 3 days into cruise I get informed that I was being written up and would have to go to XO's mast. When i asked why, he said i was being charged with being UA and missing ships movment. Oh and being Drunk on watch. I pleaded my case, said maybe missed muster but nobody else had to muster. Said the ship wasnt gone so i didnt miss movement and lasly i wasnt even on watch. WTF, FTN THIS WAS BULL SHIZ. He said he didnt want to do it but HMCS wanted to make me an example.

Now im scared. I was always a 4.0 sailor, had 3 LOA's, NAM. I was really a squared away sailor. Always volunteered, never counciled, a good young man always being helpful and trying.

So, i square myself away, LPO gives me a big manila envelope and tells me to report to XOs office.
I get there a lil early and 6-7 other guys there. Check in with a PN and give him the envelope. At 0800 XO calls in first guy. He leaves and next guy goes in, this continues until im only one left.

I see XO leave office and he asks why am I here, i tell him im here for mast, he says he'll be back in a few.
At 1000hrs he comes back to office, grabs envelope and closes door. PN says he must be pissed. At 1030 LPO and HMCS come in and ask why its taking so long. PN says XO is having a bad day and dischargeing 3 sailors and 3 to brig puts him in a pissy mood.

I about crapped myself, im so screwed. HMCS says hes never seen a corpsman in ships brig. He looked so disapointed. LPO just said stay cool and good luck.

Im about to BAWL or BREAK DOWN.

XO calls us in. I stand smartly at attention, then he says HM3 step forward. I did. He said the navy appriciates my service and expects a Petty Officer to uphold the petty officer creed. He went on yak yakin and blah blahing, smiling the whole time. Im thinking he likes seeing me sweat, little does he know im about to barf all over his sadistic arse.

Then it dawned on me. Why does he keep saying Petty Officer, im an E-3. Ding Ding, I had just been promoted. HMCS and LPO tacked my crow on real good. We all had a great laugh.

What a set up by 2 great guys and mentors.
